Every year on June 5th, the world comes together to observe World Environment Day — a global reminder that our planet is in trouble and every single one of us is responsible for fixing it.
But this year, let's not just share green graphics on WhatsApp and move on. Let's talk about what this day actually means — especially for Pakistan.
What is World Environment Day?
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations in 1972. Every year it focuses on a different environmental theme to push governments, businesses, and ordinary people to take action. It is the largest global platform for environmental awareness with millions of people participating across 143+ countries.
This year's theme is "Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience."
In simple words — how do we bring dead, dry, and destroyed land back to life?
Why Pakistan Cannot Afford to Ignore This
Pakistan is one of the countries most affected by climate change — despite contributing less than 1% of global carbon emissions. That is the cruel irony of our situation.
Here is what Pakistan is already dealing with:
- 2022 Floods — one third of the entire country went underwater. Over 1,700 people died. Millions lost their homes.
- Glaciers melting — Pakistan has more glaciers than anywhere outside the polar regions. They are melting faster every year, threatening water supply for millions.
- Heatwaves — cities like Jacobabad have recorded temperatures among the hottest ever measured on Earth
- Deforestation — forests are being cut faster than they are being replanted
- Smog in Lahore — every winter, Lahore becomes one of the most polluted cities on the planet
The Good News — Pakistan Is Fighting Back
It is not all bad news. Pakistan launched the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami project which received international praise. Coastal communities are planting mangroves. Young Pakistanis are increasingly speaking up about climate justice.
But it is not enough yet.
What Can You Do Today?
You do not need to be a politician or an activist. Small actions matter:
- Plant even one tree this week
- Stop burning garbage and plastic
- Use less plastic bags — carry your own
- Save water — don't leave taps running
- Share awareness — tell your family why this matters
The Bottom Thing
Pakistan did not cause the climate crisis. But Pakistan is paying the price for it more than most. On this World Environment Day, the least we can do is acknowledge that — and commit to doing better.
The planet does not care about borders. And neither does climate change.
Today is World Environment Day — June 5th. Share this post and spread awareness. 🌍
